PORTFOLIOS > Underworld

During the quarantine period of the COVID-19 virus, I created an evolving news series of photographic mixed media pieces called "Underworld" in response to this unprecedented liminal time out of time. With an overwhelming desire to create work that expressed what I was feeling at the time but without being able to meet and photograph actual humans, I turned to stock photography of underwater women and sea creatures. With no intention of showing or selling these pieces, I was still able to work through the overwhelming fear of drowning in my own lungs and document that sense of panic and then resignation to the inevitable force of the virus.

While we were all submerged, holding our breath, waiting to re-surface and exhale, some of us transformed into different hybrid versions of ourselves with new methods of adaptation, new strengths, new powers, and the ability to swim to uncharted new depths.
